The exhibition brings together a number of visual references that examine the language of drawing and sculpture as interconnected, or parallel. The intimate relationship between drawing and sculpture bridges centuries of artistic tradition. In "Ink and Stone" this is presented through the merge of contemporary artists with historic works from the collection of Zoumboulakis Galleries. Works that complement and contrast each other, addressing both the tactile and the visual dimension contained in the common space between the fields of drawing and sculpture; thus revealing intermediate, dialectical spaces, creating a context where the tactile and the ethereal converge.

Έκθεση «Βίοι Παράλληλοι» στο Μέγαρο Χορού Καλαμάτας

Ένα σημαντικό εικαστικό γεγονός, η έκθεση «Βίοι Παράλληλοι» με έργα 35 εμβληματικών Ελλήνων καλλιτεχνών, εγκαινιάζεται την Κυριακή 12 Νοεμβρίου στο Μέγαρο Χορού Καλαμάτας.

Στην αίθουσα «Black Box» του επιβλητικού πολιτιστικού κτηρίου αναφοράς της Μεσσηνιακής πρωτεύουσας θα παρουσιαστούν έργα δημιουργών που εκπροσωπούν διαφορετικές γενιές, σχολές και τεχνοτροπίες από τις πρώτες δεκαετίες του 20ου αιώνα μέχρι και τις μέρες μας σε επιμέλεια της Αρτέμιδος Ποταμιάνου, εικαστικού-επιμελήτριας. Πρόκειται για έργα ζωγραφικής, γλυπτικής, μεικτής τεχνικής και εγκαταστάσεις, όλων των διαστάσεων, που ανήκουν σε ιδιωτικές και δημόσιες συλλογές. 
Όπως σημειώνει η επιμελήτρια της έκθεσης «η έκθεση “Βίοι Παράλληλοι” αποτελεί μια γιορτή, ένα αφιέρωμα στην ανθρώπινη δημιουργικότητα. Με αφετηρία συγκεκριμένες θεματικές ενότητες, κοινές στα επιλεγμένα έργα των καλλιτεχνών, ξεκινά μια διαλεκτική αφήγηση που εκτυλίσσεται με βάση τις κοινές αναζητήσεις και τα ερωτήματα που θέτονται από κάθε έργο. Οι κοινωνικοί θεσμοί, οι ρόλοι ανάμεσα στους ανθρώπους, τα φύλα και τις τάξεις, η ανάγκη για αλλαγή, ο αγώνας κι η αγωνία για ένα καλύτερο μέλλον, υπαρξιακά ταξίδια αλλά και θέματα που αφορούν στην ίδια την εικαστική πρακτική, την αναπαράσταση, την αποτύπωση διαρθρώνουν τα μέρη του διαλόγου αυτού δημιουργώντας μια εικονική στιχομυθία ανάμεσα στους καλλιτέχνες. Η συμμετοχή, η αλληλεπίδραση, η μετάφραση και μετουσίωση της προσωπικής εικαστικής διεργασίας σε βίωμα κι εμπειρία, μια συνέργεια που τελικά καθορίζει τη ζωή ενός έργου τέχνης».

H ομαδική έκθεση σύγχρονης τέχνης «Avarna Fluida» διοργανώνεται στο Νιόκαστρο Πύλου, σε επιμέλεια της Στέλλας Χριστοφή και σε συνεργασία με την Εφορεία Αρχαιοτήτων Μεσσηνίας (Υπουργείο Πολιτισμού) με κοινό όραμα την ανάπτυξη ενός γόνιμου διαλόγου κατά τη συνάντηση του αρχαίου μνημείου με τη σύγχρονη τέχνη. 

Το Νιόκαστρο χτίστηκε από τους Οθωμανούς το 1573 μετά την ήττα τους στη ναυμαχία της Ναυπάκτου για τον καλύτερο έλεγχο ενός από τους σημαντικότερους εμπορικούς θαλάσσιους δρόμους μεταξύ Ανατολής-Δύσης και συνιστά ένα από τα καλύτερα διατηρημένα κάστρα του ελλαδικού χώρου. Στο εσωτερικό του φιλοξενούνται μνημεία, μουσεία και εκθέσεις που προσφέρουν μια διαχρονική περιήγηση στην περιοχή της Πυλίας και της ευρύτερης περιοχής.

Η έκθεση Avarna Fluida, με τον τίτλο της να παραπέμπει στην ονομασία του κάστρου κατά την οθωμανική περίοδο επανέρχεται στην ρευστότητα του χρόνου και την αναβίωση των παρελθοντικών ιχνών στο παρόν. Το όραμα συνεχίζεται με νομαδικό χαρακτήρα σε μέρη που «έχουν απολιθωθεί» επαναπροσεγγίζοντας την αρχαιολογία και την ευρύτερη έννοια του τοπίου διερευνώντας την σύνδεση διαφορετικών προσεγγίσεων. Όπως εξηγεί ο Agamben, ο θεατής δεν αντιλαμβάνεται μόνο ότι οι εικόνες κινούνται, αλλά μεταμορφώνονται, όπως είναι πολύ φυσικό σε αυτές τις εικόνες. Οι εικόνες φορτίζουν τους εαυτούς τους από τον χρόνο, σχεδόν στο σημείο εκείνο που εκρήγνυνται. Αυτός ο καιρολογικός κορεσμός συνιστά την συγκεκριμένη τους αύρα.

Τα έργα εκτίθενται στους υπαίθριους χώρους του Νιόκαστρου προτείνοντας σύγχρονες χειρονομίες με έργα γλυπτικής, εγκαταστάσεων και τρισδιάστατων κατασκευών, ενώ η έκθεση ξεκινά με site specific και ηχητικές performance.

Cine Paradise / Industries of Coexistence

From September 13 to 24, 2023 Eleusis European Capital of Culture proudly presents Mystery 73: Cine Paradise / Industries of Coexistence. Curated by Marina Fokidis, this captivating event features a series of screenings showcasing new media artworks, non-narrative films, and documentaries, created by 22 internationally renowened artists. The films will be presented—in the presence of their creators—at an enchanting seaside open-air cinema, nestled in the ancient yet contemporary-industrial town of Elefsina, near Athens.

The featured artists include: Marwa Arsanios, Panos Charalambous, Tamar Guimarães and Kasper Akhøj, Johan Grimonprez, Evi Kalogiropoulou, Menelaos Karamaghiolis, Jumana Manna, Hira Nabi, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Theodoris Prodromidis, Ben Russell, Alan Sekula and Noël Burch, Kostis Velonis, Barbara Wagner & Benjamin De Burca, Driant Zeneli, as well as James Bridle, Petros Moris, Eva Papamargariti, Agnieszka Polska (the latests supported by the PCAI collection).

This cinematic journey will also feature an architectural intervention by Aristide Antonas.

What is the common thread between: a documentary filmed in collaboration with the shipbuilders’ association in Gadani, Pakistan; a contemporary interpretation of the lost Atlantis; Hamlet reclining on a garbage hill contemplating the clouds; the voyage of a container from Rotterdam to Los Angeles and Hong Kong; an intense televised debate on the war in Syria; a melancholic sun bearing witness to the moral and environmental decline of our planet; the spirited steps of Brazilian frevo-style dance; and intimate conversations among women in Kurdistan, Colombia, and Lebanon, among others?

Cine Paradise / Industries of Coexistence presents a collection of film narratives that explore various communities, rituals, seas, planetary degradation, labor, and displacement. It aspires to ignite cathartic conversations—however fleeting—across diverse audiences. The project is an experiment in presenting art films in the realm of everyday entertainment spaces, beyond the boundaries of film festivals, museums, and art institutions. The screenings will take place in a quaint open-air cinema, originally built by American soldiers -who were stationed in Elefsina -during the Cold War and sustained over the years by the dedication of local cinephiles.

The title “Cine Paradise” evokes the symbolism of transitioning from the “world of the living” to the “world of the dead,” a theme deeply ingrained in the mythology of Elefsina and the human soul since antiquity. The subtitle, “Industries of Coexistence,” alludes to the significance of labor in propelling our planet forward, even during times of pandemics, crises, and global conflicts. Elefsina, being a hub of Greek workforce, embodies both the virtues and challenges of such locations. The fundamental coexistence of these  (and all) different “worlds” is at the heart of this particular quest. Join us.

Time is a Child

 

GALERIST and Perasma is presenting ‘Time is a Child’, a group exhibition that will take place on the Island of Leros, Greece until 30th of July 2023. 

Taking its name from the words attributed to Heraclitus: “Time is a child playing draughts by the sea”, an expression defining his perception of the fleeting and ever-changing nature of time, the exhibition brings together works by artists who reflect on the ceaseless possibilities inherent to the concept of time.

Works by Alice Guittard, Ayça Telgeren, Burcu Yağcıoğlu, Elif Uras, Evgenia Vereli, Kostis Velonis, Lara Ögel, Malvina Panagiotidi, Maria Joannou, Martin Creed, Merve İşeri, Nazım Ünal Yılmaz, Nil Yalter, Nuri Kuzucan, Rashid al Khalifa, Savvas Laz, Serkan Özkaya, Serra Duran, Silva Bingaz, Stefania Strouza, William Kentridge, Yeşim Akdeniz and Yusuf Sevinçli are brought together within the building, and they gush out to its outdoor area nesting in between the eucalyptus and pine trees surrounding it.

The Medieval Monks Who Lived on Top of Giant Pillars

To our modern eyes, this is a profoundly weird image – but it would have been a recognisable, even iconic, one if we were living in the early medieval Middle East. To explain how we got here – and how that guy got on that pillar - we need to step back and tell the origin story of one of the most recognisable characters in medieval life: the monk.

First, let’s wind the clock back all the way to the mid-third century. Rome is still the bustling, million-strong metropole of a continent-spanning empire. Legionaries are off fighting battles against the Goths along the Danube. Christianity is a curious minority sect clinging to life despite often-ferocious persecution from the emperor’s officials. And in the wealthy province of Egypt, a young man, barely 18, who we will come to know as Anthony makes an unusual decision. Mourning the recent death of his parents, he finds inspiration in Christ’s teaching that the perfect man will give everything he has to the poor. Once he’s set aside a little of his money to provide for his younger sister’s welfare and chucked her in a convent, he departs for the endless desolation of Egypt’s desert interior (We have no idea, by the way, what the sister made of all this business. I suspect she was less than impressed).

Eventually, Anthony pitches up in an old, abandoned tomb in the desert, to live a life of isolation and mortification (a religious concept, meaning to deny the desires of the flesh), eating and drinking only just enough to keep his body at bare minimum functionality. Did this make him a devoted servant of Christ who accessed a level of connection with his god unprecedented for a mortal man, or a total bore? Your mileage may vary.

Unfortunately for Anthony, his dream of a life of solitary contemplation didn’t work out as planned. He quickly became a local celebrity, with countless Egyptian Christians making proto-pilgrimages to visit the home of a man they came to believe had a unique connection to the Almighty. This only got worse when Emperor Constantine legalised Christianity in 313, and Anthony moved further into the desert to avoid his admirers.
